They smoke package after package and avoid lung cancer. How it’s possible? Interesting discovery

Lung cancer is one of the most common and worst prognostic cancers, and smoking is the strongest contributing factor. It turns out, however, that there are people who burn “package after package” for years and yet happily avoid disease. How it’s possible? Scientists have discovered a possible answer. However, we warn you right away – it by no means proves that smoking is less harmful. Instead, it can be an important step in the prevention and early detection of one of the most lethal cancers.

  1. The risk of lung cancer is increased by age, air pollution (e.g. smog), and contact with toxic substances, such as asbestos. However, smoking is considered the most important cause of the disease
  2. The longer an addiction lasts and the more tobacco we smoke, the more likely cancer is to develop
  3. Scientists suspect some smokers may have a strong internal mechanism or immunity that helps limit mutations in lung cells and protect against cancer
  4. Scientists need more evidence to support this explanation

Smoking – the most important cause of lung cancer development

According to the World Health Organization, lung cancer is one of the most common causes of cancer deaths – in both men and women. According to estimates, about 2 million people die from it each year. Moreover, there are no typical symptoms of lung cancer, so early diagnosis is very difficult. This is also the reason why it is one of the worst-prognostic cancers.

The factors that increase the risk of developing lung cancer include age (over 63 years of age), air pollution (smog, car exhaust fumes), contact with toxic substances, such as asbestos. However, smoking tobacco is considered to be the most important cause of lung cancer development, i.e. not only cigarettes, but also pipes, cigars or the so-called hookah. The risk, although lower, is also posed by passive smoking, i.e. breathing cigarette smoke. It is known that the longer an addiction lasts and the more tobacco we smoke, the more likely cancer is to develop.

Some people, however, manage to smoke cigarettes “pack by pack” for years without getting sick. Scientists from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York decided to look at this issue and concluded that it may not be just a matter of luck. They shared their discovery in the journal Nature Genetics. 33 participants with varying smoking histories participated in the study. Among them there were 14 people aged 11 to 86 who had never smoked and 19 smokers aged between 44 and 81 who smoked different amounts of cigarettes – the upper limit was 116 pack-years (one pack a year means smoking one pack of cigarettes – 20 cigarettes). – daily for one year).

Some heavy smokers may have a mechanism to reduce the risk of cancer

Why does smoking even cause lung cancer? It has long been assumed that carcinogenic substances in tobacco smoke can damage the genetic material of bronchial epithelial cells, leading to gene mutations and, consequently, to neoplastic changes. This study also showed: scientists found far more mutations in smokers’ lung cells than in non-smokers.

“It also appears that the number of mutations in cells was closely related to the amount of tobacco smoked – but only up to a point,” notes iflscience.com. The researchers noted that the linear increase in cancer risk occurred up to approximately 23 pack-years, after which there was no further increase in mutation rates. The authors of the study suspect that their bodies have some sort of DNA damage repair or smoke detoxification system, which reduces susceptibility to mutations. In other words, some of the biggest smokers may have a strong mechanism or immunity that helps stop the mutations from accumulating further in their cells and thus reduce the risk of lung cancer. However, scholars reserve that more evidence is needed to support this explanation.

If true, the findings could lay the groundwork for a new strategy for the early detection of lung cancer risk. As a follow-up to this study, the team hopes to find out if a person’s ability to repair DNA or detoxify can be assessed, thereby revealing their risk of developing lung cancer from smoking. “This could prove to be an important step towards the prevention and early detection of lung cancer risk, away from the current Herculean efforts needed to fight late-stage disease,” says study co-author, professor of medicine, epidemiology, population health and genetics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine Dr. Simon Spivack.

According to the European Office of WHO, the lifetime risk of developing lung cancer in smokers is 22 times higher than in non-smokers. Importantly, secondhand smoke can also result in lung cancer and the development of other diseases that are typical of smokers, but in non-smokers. The side stream of cigarette smoke is the main factor increasing such risk in bystanders, exposed to cigarette smoke. When tobacco is burned, high concentrations of carcinogenic compounds (carcinogens) are created, which nonsmokers breathe into the lungs of such smoke.

The good news is that quitting smoking almost completely solves the problem of lung cancer. Do you want to help yourself quit smoking and detoxify your body? Reach for Stop Nałogom – Panaseus dietary supplement.

According to the WHO, 9 out of 10 lung cancer can only be avoided if smokers quit:

– Quitting smoking is the gold standard we strive for. However, people still smoke. By saying “let’s reduce smoking”, we will affect 85 percent. on the epidemiology of lung cancer – said prof. dr hab. n. med. Lucjan Wyrwicz, head of the Department of Oncology and Radiotherapy of the National Institute of Oncology, member of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC).

During the scientific session “Primary prevention of cardiological and oncological diseases” prof. Lucjan Wyrwicz drew attention to the importance of nicotine substitution in the context of reducing certain oncological risks in smoking patients. For those in whom even pharmacological treatment has not led to a break from the addiction, nicotine substitution may prove to be a way to reduce health risks. It is related to a change in the way the smoker consumes nicotine:

– Tobacco heating systems should theoretically reduce the risk of cancers directly related to smoking. From the FDA report [United States Food and Drug Administration – dop. aut.] shows that they significantly decrease the amount of toxic substances in relation to the so-called the reference cigarette. Also when it comes to carcinogens, the decreases are substantial, more than 10 times, for various substances – whether they are related to cancer by the FDA or, for example, to cardiovascular disease. However, we should remember and say that quitting smoking is the gold standard. This perfectly reduces health risks. And if this is not possible, other methods also affect it – said prof. Exercise.
