Abortiporus – A fungus belonging to the Meruliev family.

This is an annual representative of the mushroom dynasty. The stem of the fungus is poorly expressed and has a fruit-like shape. Abortiporus is easily recognizable by its hat. It is medium in size with respect to a small foot and has a funnel-shaped or even flat shape. They look like a fan or tiled single hats. It often happens that they grow together in the form of a rosette. The color of the caps is red with a brownish-red tint, and an elegant white stripe runs along the wavy edge. The consistency is elastic. Closer to the upper part, the pulp can be easily pushed through, in the lower part it becomes more rigid and pushing through is no longer so easy. The flesh is white or slightly creamy.

The spore-bearing part is also white, tubular in shape. Its thickness reaches 8mm. The pores are labyrinthine and angular. They are split (1-3 per 1 mm).

Basidiomas are about 10 cm in size, and their thickness is up to 1,5 cm. It is rare to find sessile ones, often they have a lateral or central leg and an elongated base.

Abortiporus has a two-layer fabric: the hat and stem of the mushroom are covered with a felt-spongy upper layer, and the second layer is inside the stem and has a fibrous-leathery structure (its feature is strong hardening after drying). The boundary between these two layers is sometimes delineated by a dark line.

Abortiporus can be found in deciduous and mixed forests, parks where linden, elm, and oak grow. In such places, you should pay attention to the stumps and their bases, Abortiporus will be waiting for you there. In coniferous forests, it can be found extremely rarely, but on the roots of trees burned after a fire, they are quite common.

It should be remembered that Abortiporus is a rare mushroom, but if you meet him, you can easily identify him by his characteristic features – fan-shaped and interesting color.

The presence of Abortiporus causes white rot of various tree species.
