Recycle clothes or furniture

Clothing: opt for “le Relais”

Your children have grown up, you want to renew your wardrobe… It’s time to sort through your clothes and give them away. The “Le Relais” association is the only sector specializing in the collection of clothing, shoes and textiles. Several options are then available to you: you can put them in the “Relais” plastic bags – left in your mailbox – which will then be picked up by the association. Another possibility, the containers scattered in the municipalities. If you have a large amount of business to donate, members of the association will come by occasionally. Finally, 15 “Relais” welcome you for direct donations.

Furniture and equipment in good condition: think of the Companions

Are you moving or want to get rid of a piece of furniture? Call the Emmaus community closest to you, companions will come to your home free of charge to remove your furniture. Don’t do it at the last minute, sometimes it takes about three weeks. But beware, Emmaüs is not a “free mover”: furniture in too poor condition is refused. Unable to resell or repair, they will be sent to the recycling center, a landfill cost borne by the community.

Household equipment: don’t forget to recycle

Since November 15, 2006, the collection and treatment of household waste has become compulsory. Distributors must participate by taking back your old equipment free of charge with any purchase of a new device. If yours is old and you do not have proof of purchase, contact the Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME) on 01 47 65 20 00. For Ile-de-France, Syctom () will also give you good advice for recycling your equipment. Finally, be aware that all municipalities have a bulky item recovery service. You just have to call them and make an appointment, often even for the next day.

Toys: give them to La Grande Récré

Take part in the “Hotte de l’Amitié”, organized by the La Grande Récré stores, from October 20 to December 25, 2007. The idea is simple: the 125 stores of the chain collect toys, preferably in good condition, which your children have abandoned. They no longer want them, but others, disadvantaged, will be delighted to discover them at the foot of a tree. The toys collected will be sorted and repaired if necessary. In 2006, 60 toys were collected in this way by local charities.

Medicines: bring them back to the pharmacy

All medicines, whether expired or not, must be returned to pharmacies. For your pharmacist, it is a legal and ethical obligation to accept them. Medicines that have not expired are redistributed to humanitarian associations and sent to countries that lack them. The expired ones are recycled.
